Hornady factory primers?

Postby Stealthshooter » Thu Aug 11, 2011 12:04 pm

I ran onto some new factory primed Hornady 450 brass. I was wondering what primers they use and if they are hot enough to reliably ignite 296?

If they're factory primers, they should be a perfect match for 296. I believe they use a very similar, if not exactly that powder for their 250gr loads.

That's good news!! Not too bad of a price either. 50 New factory primed 450 brass for $48 shipped.

Heck, even unprimed, that's a better deal than you usually see for 50 new 450b brass.

297, which is slightly slower than 296..

Looks like 297 is what is used in surplus 30 carbine ammo. I found some for sale in an 8# keg but I sure can't find much info on it. Is it a better choice than 296?

Pretty much the same thing, only slightly slower and cheaper by allot. What was the asking price, for that 8 pounder?..

I think the main reason Lil Gun is so prolific on these forums is that being a little faster than 296 and 297, it's still effective with the 200s and 225s. I'm not so sure that 296 and 297 are in the efficiency sweet spot for the lighter bullets. I could be wrong on that as I've never loaded with either of them. At the least, they'd be more dependent upon a tight neck tension than faster powders.

I also just noticed another surplus powder WC820 it says it's good for .410 and 30 carbine loads. It's also $100 for an 8# keg. What do we know about this powder?
