Am looking to load 400gr cast bullets for subsonic use in a bolt action.

Anyone use Unique for this, suggestions on loads?

Interested in any response, I want to try some 405 grain Cast that were originally for my 45-70 but are now sized .452".

Tried a handful of 4oogr cast bullets over 10gr of Unique today.

Was just shooting off the back of the truck at 50 yards but accuracy was good, just under an inch and velocity was around 960fps and stable.

Very mild report pleasant to shoot and more energy at 150-200 yards than a 45acp or 10mm at the muzzle.

What would be considered a max charge with that weight bullet and Unique?

Honestly I have no idea, and am having a really hard time extrapolating data.

My goal again was to have two loads and with a little more teaking/experimenting I could see this being very close to my final low end/sub load. It is very pleasent to shoot and I would feel comfortable using it on varmints etc. Haven't been able to find any .45 gas checks so have been shooting it naked too, which at theses velocities doesn't seem to hurt anything.

What I would REALLY like to do is find another load for this same boolit, with a gas check and maybe a touch harder alloy and push it to a real thumper status.

It being a bolt should help but so far can't find much to work with.

Will post when I do!

I tried a Missouri Bullet, 405 grain RNFP over 10.2,4,6,8,11.0 grains of Unique yesterday. Bullet was originally .458" sized to .452". Best load for accuracy was 10.6 grains yielding 1053 fps. SD was 6 and ES was 11. ME was 997 ft/lbs. 3 round accuracy at 75 yards was 1.411". 11.0 grains yielded 1077 fps but had a unexplained flyer at 75 yards that was inches away from two that measured .183". I'm thinking I can slowly increase charges to 12 grains safely, possibly 13 grains. I'm shooting bolt action too.

Im trying to find a safe starting place to load 500gr cast subsonics with Unique. Any suggestions? How did you determine a safe starting place for the 400s? Thanks!

I liked unique but had concerns with lack of case fill- went with tb instead and have been very happy.

Best of luck keep us posted!

I went with Enforcer 18 gr. gives me 1025 fps with a Makers 400 gr. sub-sonic....seating the bullet.07" off the lands the case is almost full with the long all copper bullet...
50 yards + 1 1/2".... 100 yards - 2 1/2"
It will shoot all day into 1" at 100 yards from a Ruger American with a Hybrid...
Need to do some "wet media" (water soaked newspapers) testing at ranges up to 100 yards...with the inter net its just not that easy to get newspapers ant more...
