450 bushmaster 300gr hornady xtp

Anyone loaded this up yet? I just loaded up 50 rounds of xtp hornady 300 gr with 32.4. Gr lil gun. I haven't shot it yet but I like the xtp over the ftx. I have seen several cases of jacket separation from the ftx stuff on wild pigs.

Welcome back! You've been gone for a year and a half.

A couple of questions: Are your bullets the Hornady # 45230 300-gran XTP bullets, or the Hornady #45235 300-grain XTP Mag bullets? The former are fine for punching paper and plinking, but they are pretty soft for use on game at 450B speeds. You probably knew that. The Mag style is better for game.

Have you worked up to this load? It's a smidgen over the max load in the Hornady manual.

Something else, your idea about jacket separation.

The question, even with jacket separation, we have enough residual horse-power to decide all of the issues. The lessor calibers suffer from jacket separation, simply because they are on the ragged edge of not working well and a jacket separation in them can be catastrophic. This syndrome carries over to us, but generally is wrong headed thinking.

So, the real question is how well did you kill the pigs, even with jacket separation?

Having said all of that, the Doc's mention of the XTP-MAGs is very relevant. The Mags hold-up well to our speeds..

Have you thought of using swaged 350gr .458 Hornady Interlocks? I've found that they hang onto their jackets quite well, even at 18-1900fps. They'd make short work of any little (or massive) piggy that ran into.

An added bonus is in these difficult times we're in, they seem to be more available than anything pistol caliber.

We have many 458 bullets to choose from, because of your work we can now get 250gr 458's on up to at least 700gr. If we find shortages, maybe Taco has the cure, by reminding us what we could do..

I had completely missed your interlock work, those things really hold up well, of course they were built for Hot loaded 45-70's and the 458 Win-Mag.

Do you remember what the speeds were?

Fyi, you can get those in a Flat-Point..

I was able to push them up to 1900fps I think, but settled on 1850, as that was the best balance of accuracy and power. I think there was still more room to go, but hey, a 350 @ 1850fps is pretty darn potent. Didn't see the need to put any unnecessary stress on the weapon for 50-100 more fps.

Those are very hot 45-70 equivalents!

Yup, no need to stress the system, we've have enough horse-power left over anyways..
