Trajectory Surprise

Postby AR167 » Wed Sep 29, 2010 7:00 pm

Finally had access to a 100yd range today. Took along the 16" 450.
I had initially sighted it in 1" low at 25yds. I assumed I would be close at 100yds, but since my recent hunt calls for a 50yd max shot I started there.
Well, @ 50yds I was 1" high.
Moved out to 100yds, and to my surprise I was 4+ inches high.

After a 16 clicks down I was dead on. Accuracy was outstanding, at least MOA.

I guess the point of the story is to check zero at different ranges, I would have been in a bad place if I would have had a 100yd shot with a 25yd zero.

The hogs meet the 450 on the 16th of Oct. I'll be sure to let everyone know the results  ...

Yup, you don't need to have any surprises. I might suggest one of the many, free, ballistics programs. If you study them in detail, there will be no surprises..t

I did play around with the one that norma has. I haven't been able to find any reasonable correlation between what the specs are and what happened today, but that's why you can't rely on computers.

I use Ballistic FTE (Field Tactical Edition) on my Iphone and trajectory estimates have been spot on so far. It even has mildot and range calculations like the snipers use on the PDA's. Even still I always Check zero with a round or two prior to a hunt. It only takes a minute and is peace of mind. :D
